Recently my best friend celebrated a milestone birthday. I hated not being with her to celebrate, but in the last decade we have lived in different states. I won’t give a number here because we are the same age, my birthday is next month and she is not above revenge. She’s not my best friend of the week, year, decade; we have been best friends for over 20 years. She was the first friend I had a sleepover with and my roommate in college. Her parents and siblings are like my own and vice versa. We are both married and have had the honor of being each other’s maid of honor. We have helped each other pick our wedding dresses and loved each other’s children fiercely. We have six kids between us, but only one girl in the bunch! We have fought like sisters, been red hot mad at each other, but ALWAYS loyal to each other, even when we don’t see eye to eye. Our differences are more than our commonalities. We are almost opposite individuals with one common thread; we truly love and respect each other. We have been through weddings, children and deaths that shock our world, but I would do absolutely anything for her and I know she would do the same.
I am the vein one, and she has no problem telling me, it’s not ALL about me. She is the down to Earth, mess with my people and feel my wrath type, so I have to be the calm in her storm sometimes.
Why have we lasted so long? Maybe because we have both had to bury brothers and cousins. Maybe because that out of the four of us hellions that used to have a blast all summer, we are the only two still living. Maybe because the friend we drove all night in a 1980’s metro in pouring rain, without parental consent, to hang out with for a few days died just before our ten-year high school reunion. Maybe because I married her first cousin and we have now been married ten years and have four amazing little boys. Maybe the universe just new that we needed each other for the dark times and the bright times throughout our lives.
She is my person and if yesterday predicts tomorrow, she always will be.
